Beet Salad - By Maria

Hi Friends and Family, 

We're in Colombia. We went to Panama first, and we had a boat ride. They called monkeys to us so they could eat off the boats and we went on a 7 mile hike and saw agoutis, coatis, monkeys, sloths, raccoons,
one anteater, frogs and lizards. 

   

And in Colombia, we have a really good cook. I like hot cocoa, panela agua, and fresh orange juice. Panela agua is a warm sugary drink. I also like cooked plantains, banuelos, and empanadas. I like the beet salad, but it is not my favorite. 

We're in a small city with mountains surrounding us. There is rainy and medium weather. The house is awesome and pretty. I like that there are extra blankets to stay warm.

I am in Spanish school. They teach me Spanish in the school. I love the classes. My brother is the only other student. 

I'm having fun, but I miss you all.

    Hi Maria! We miss you too! We hope you are having fun and we are excited for when you get back. We have had some snow and cold days. What is the temperature where you are? You said you are happy for blankets so that made us start wondering. What is your Spanish school like?

      Beets were in the beet salad and hard boiled eggs were in the beet salad and I think that might be all. Zaphalia, it was very good. - Maria

Hello from Selva Mojada, which translates to Wet Jungle. It is one of the rainiest places in the world. We were in Choco, which is a Colombian state on the Pacific Ocean. Did you know that Colombia is one of the places that produces the most coffee in the world? Here are some interesting facts about how they do it. We are staying on a coffee farm, and the coffee harvesting season is just being wrapped up. The typical harvest last two months. During the harvest, the farmers hire coffee pickers to pick the coffee berries off plants. When the coffee fruit is ripe and ready to be picked, it is dark red. The fruit around the coffee bean tastes sweet and juicy. When you eat it, you eat the flesh off the bean, not bean itself. Hummingbirds and Hot Springs - By Maria

Have you ever been in a hot spring? I bet you've been in a hot tub. It is like that, except it is natural, so the earth heats it up.  We went up to some hot springs in the mountains, in the middle of nowhere. The hotel we stayed at was the only thing around. It was called Termales Del Ruiz. Our altitude was over 11,000 feet high, so we had to drink a lot of water so we wouldn't get headaches or altitude sickness.  In addition to hot springs, there were trails and places to view birds. Most of the birds were hummingbirds. We were given little plastic containers that you can put nectar in, and the hummingbirds will fly onto your hands to drink the nectar. It was exciting every time the birds would come to you, and it never got old.
