Climbing Mavicure

 

Our first full morning in the Amazon, we woke up at 4 am and took a 2-minute boat ride to climb a mountain called Mavicure. Mavicure is a mountain that is very famous in the area. Mavicure means “arrow with poison” in a different language.

We started by climbing up a steep rock. There were ropes there because when it rains it is very slippery. After we climbed up the rock, it was flat first for a little bit and then we got into the jungle and started climbing UP. It was very steep, and we had to use ladders to get up and down. Though it felt like we were going slow, we were the first group up and we got the peak all to ourselves for a while, but the top was so cloudy that we couldn’t see a thing. We didn’t have a view, but it was nice to stop and it got way colder at the top than it was at the bottom, because it was really hot at the bottom and we were sweating a lot.

Towards the top we stopped and our guide took some palm leaves off and started weaving a fan. At the top, she wove four fans and a couple birds out of palm leaves. She told us the legend about the history of where the mountains came from. There are three big mountains, and one is called Pajarito, and one is called Mono, and the other is Mavicure, but they are all three together known as Mavicure, but you can’t climb Mono or Pajarito.

          It was a hard hike but it was rewarding. When we were done, we enjoyed breakfast and swimming in the river.

  There are a lot of dogs in Colombia. They are well-behaved dogs. The first dog I met on this trip is a dog called Toby who lives in a restaurant.   The first town we stayed in was called El Carmen de Viboral. This town is a big town; about 65,000 people live here. It is known for all of its ceramics. Greenhouses and plant nurseries are everywhere.  The ceramics are painted with colorful pigments by hand and they are really pretty. They are also all around the city on houses and buildings for decoration.  Building decorated with ceramic plates Tiles were also a common decoration.  Why aren't pharmacies so pretty in the U.S.?  Even the planters are decorated!  This is the bottom of a lamppost decorated with tiles and ceramic plates.  We had the opportunity to paint some ceramics and it was really hard, but it was really cool. Tayrona National Park - By Maria

On New Years Eve, we went on a motorcycle up a mountain, and it was my first time ever going on a motorcycle. It was fun.  After we took the motorcycles up, we had to hike back down the other side for two and a half hours. It was steep and rocky.  We saw lots of big spiders.    When we arrived at the beach, we saw a lot of crabs and big toads. We found another kid from Spain and we played with him a lot. He showed us how to catch the crabs. He knew four languages and he was only ten!  Look at this HUGE toad and all the tadpoles.  This is where we slept the first night. I never slept in a hammock before and it was comfortable but I did wake up a lot.  This was my favorite part. We played cards with two other families. They were both from Europe. We taught them some games, but we taught them the games in Spanish because it was the only language we all had in common, even though it wasn't anyone's native language. It was very fun to do that.
