This is my room. I share it with my brothers. 












The temperature here is about 55 to 73 degrees, and very rainy. Our fireplace is our only heater. 

School is really fun. Everyday you learn something different, like fruit, desserts, or the ABC's. I have a nice teacher and no other kids than me and my brother. 


Tuesday morning we went horseback riding. It was very fun. 


Thursday morning we went paragliding a third time this year. It is really fun. You get to jump off a mountain and fly to the ground with a parachute.

Wednesday night and Thursday night there was a candle holiday where you walk around and see a lot of lit candles. 

We've had a fun time and I miss you.

    Maria, thanks for keeping us up to date in what you and the family are doing in Columbia. It looks like you are having a great time. Did I understand correctly that the place where you eat is open to the outside? Are all of you doing the paragliding or just you and Dad? Have a great time on the rest of your trip.

      Yes we eat outside. Everyone but mom went paragliding because she threw up last time.

    I go to class one hour a day for four days a week. My favorite Spanish word is mariposas (butterflies). Someone lifted me a little bit to get on my horse, but I also pulled myself up with the stirrups. I didn't know the horse's name, but we walked, trotted, and ran.

          For New Years, there is a service where they thank God for all the great things that happened last year, and ask for a good next year. They have a tradition all over Colombia where they burn a creepy human sized doll at midnight. The doll represents all of the bad things that have happened in the past year. They are made out of leftover things like flat soccer balls for the head, and other accessories like the Dunkin’ Donuts employee hat, and are old clothes that are stuffed with straw. What the kids do is start dancing at 7:00pm and  go to bed at 9:00pm and then they wake up at midnight so they can participate in the New Year's celebration, which includes burning the doll, hugs, handshakes, and candy . The adults don't stop their party until 7am. There is loud music and dancing all night long.                                   The dolls burning

Nature in the Amazon Rainforest

During our time in the Amazon, we went everywhere either by boat or foot. Depending on the season, the water raises or lowers every day. They said it was 2 meters, but we didn’t notice that much. We were there in the dry season, so the water was lowering.  When the water lowers a beach island may appear and when the water gets really low the beach will connect to the land. When the water rises, the beaches completely disappear. We hiked through areas that are sometimes completely under water, even the tops of the trees!     We went to a stream where the water is red, orange, and yellow from the iron. It was really pretty. We went to almost all places by boat, some were short like 2 minutes, but some rides were very long like 4 hours. On our boat rides we were able to see dolphins. Some dolphins were pink and some were gray, but the pink ones weren’t fully pink in color. These are endangered. Amazon Communities - By Maria

When we went to the Amazon, we spent time in two indigenous communities. Both communities were right off the river. There are no roads to them; we just rode in a boat to get to them. The first community we visited was called Comunidad Remanso. There are 200 people, 40 of them are kids (0-10). We spent three nights there. The first night we were the only guests (and we ate fish). The second night 16 more people joined and it was the community’s record for visitors. That day, a shipment came in on canoes, that the mayor bought, of mattresses, water buckets, kayaks, big pots, and rice. There was a huge community meeting in the soccer field. Everyone in the community came to get stuff for tourism and some was for them. The soccer field was in the middle of the community. Every evening people would play a game of soccer, and a lot of people in the community watched. Even the dogs knew how to play soccer! The people in Remanso were friendly, but a little shy.
